Smith scored an eagle on the fifth hole and repeated the feat on the 15e Flag to hand out a 65 (under-8) card on the Plantation course in Kapalua, Hawaii.

More than half of the 38 golfers present at the tournament played under the 70s, while playing conditions were rather calm.

Coming back from the longest voluntary break of their careers, Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm took advantage of these conditions to tie for second after completing the course in 66 strokes. Daniel Berger shares the position with them.

Cantlay overcame a boguey on the first hole and landed six birdies and an eagle. Rahm was unable to take advantage of par-5s, but he didn’t commit any bugs.

Both golfers were among the contenders for the FedEx Cup title last season. Cantlay won US $ 15 million – and PGA Player of the Year – after triumphing in the Circuit Championship.

No Canadian takes part in this first event of the year 2022.
