Cameron meets Trump in Florida ahead of Washington visit

(Washington) The head of British diplomacy David Cameron was to meet former US President Donald Trump in Florida on Monday, before a two-day official visit to Washington, London said.

“His visit to Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday will follow the minister’s meeting with former President Donald Trump in Florida today, April 8,” said a spokesperson for the British Foreign Office.

“It is common for ministers to meet opposition candidates as part of their international work,” added the same source.

This meeting with Donald Trump, opponent of the current Democratic President Joe Biden for the November presidential election, comes on the eve of a visit where David Cameron will plead in favor of a release of American aid for Ukraine and discuss the situation in Gaza.

The head of British diplomacy, who will meet with American Secretary of State Antony Blinken and parliamentarians, will “urge” the United States to release its aid for Ukraine, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs British.

“A success for Ukraine and the failure of Putin are vital for the security of Americans and Europeans,” David Cameron said in the press release, as Russia increases its pressure in the east of the country.

A Russian victory would be “clearly heard in Beijing, Tehran and North Korea,” he warns.

The American program of military and economic assistance to Kyiv, amounting to 60 billion dollars (55.3 billion euros), has been blocked in Congress since last year due to divisions between Democrats and Republicans, while The presidential election is looming in November.

David Cameron will meet members of Congress.

The assistance provided by European countries and the United States “is making a huge difference on the battlefields of Ukraine and in the waters of the Black Sea,” the ministry emphasizes.

David Cameron will also discuss the Middle East and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza via a corridor between Cyprus and the Palestinian territory.

The visit comes as pressure mounts in the UK to suspend arms sales to Israel.

London toughened its tone towards Israel after the death on 1er April of seven humanitarian workers, including three British, killed in Gaza by an Israeli drone, while they were delivering food to the besieged Palestinian territory and threatened with famine.

In Washington, David Cameron will continue to “pressure for a full, urgent and transparent investigation” to be carried out into these “unacceptable” deaths.
