Airbnb: cameras now banned in accommodation

Faced with the numerous abuses reported in recent years, owners who rent their accommodation on Airbnb will be prohibited from installing cameras in their properties.

Faced with the numerous abuses reported in recent years, owners who rent their accommodation on Airbnb will be prohibited from installing cameras in their properties.

Cameras in the bathrooms, in the bedrooms, which film the tenants without them realizing it. Many women attest to having been victims of voyeurism from the owners to whom they had rented accommodation on Airbnb. From April 30, all cameras will be prohibited inside accommodation. Until now, owners could install them in certain common areas, such as the living room or the corridor, provided that they were clearly mentioned in the advertisements.

For a better protected privacy

But the excesses continued to accumulate. An American woman did not hesitate to call the Miami police in the middle of the night for reassurance. In June 2023, a young French woman confided that she had been filmed without her knowledge in the shower. A camera had been hidden in an alarm clock placed on the bathroom shelf. The young woman filed a complaint against the owner of the apartment. The platform, for its part, assures that it has nothing to reproach itself for. With this new measure, Airbnb says it wants to strengthen the privacy of its tenants.
