The ready-to-wear giant Camaïeu was placed in receivership on Monday August 1 by the Lille commercial court, its management announced to AFP. The sign was in default of payment two years after its takeover by Financière immobilière bordelaise. The brand, which employs 2,571 people, says it works “from now on to the continuation plan”. Management assures that its objective is “to preserve the activity of the company and the Camaïeu brand”.

According to Thierry Siwik, CGT delegate of Camaïeu, the management had sent in June 2021 “to dozens of donors” of“suspension of rent payments” of“between 250 and 300” stores. The objective, according to the trade unionist, being torenegotiate rentsfollowing the Covid-19 pandemic which saw footfall in clothing stores drop.

In three judgments, the Court of Cassation has in fact obliged traders to pay unpaid rent during the period when non-essential businesses were closed due to the Covid-19 epidemic. It considers that the situation was not attributable to the lessors and had not permanently deprived the traders of using their premises.
