Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania and then Franco-Belgian actor Arieh Worthalter called for a ceasefire in Gaza by receiving the César for best documentary for Olfa’s daughters and best actor for The Goldman trial Friday.

“We all know that films do not change the world, but they change our relationship to the world”declared Kaouther Ben Hania. “I too join a call for a ceasefire in Gaza because life demands it, that of Gazans and hostages, because we are united as a species”launched Arieh Worthalter, who plays the enigmatic Pierre Goldman, gangster and far-left activist, prosecuted for the murder of two pharmacists in 1976 in this film by Cédric Kahn.

“I think we should use our notoriety a little to defend justice”

“Stop killing children becomes a radical demand”had previously deplored Kaouther Ben Hania on the César stage, after paying tribute in particular to the Russian opponent Alexeï Navalny, who died a week ago, and to the founder of Wikileaks Julian Assange, who is waiting to know if British justice will grant a final appeal against his extradition to the United States.

“The massacre must stop” in Gaza, she continued. “It’s so horrible and no one can say they didn’t know. It’s the first live-screen massacre, live on our phones”underlined the 46-year-old director.

“I think we should use our notoriety a little to defend justice” she added. Olfa’s daughterswhich traces the life of a Tunisian mother confronted with the radicalization of two of her daughters, was in competition at the last Cannes festival.

The unprecedented Hamas attack on Israeli territory on October 7 resulted in the deaths of 1,160 people, the majority civilians, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli data. In retaliation, Israel vowed to annihilate the Palestinian Islamist movement, which took power in Gaza in 2007 and is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

The Israeli military offensive has left 29,514 dead in Gaza, the vast majority of them civilians, according to the latest report on Friday from the Hamas Ministry of Health.
