While playing an avid high school skateboarder in love with Anita in Sydney at the time, the hunk – who won the Logie Awards for Most Popular New Talent in a Drama Series in 1998 – lived a heavy ordeal in the 2000s. In May 2004, he was the victim of a serious car accident which plunged him into a coma for eight days. When he woke up, the actor lost an eye, crushed his jaw, dislocated facial bones and suffered multiple fractures all over his body. To repair his skull, 16 titanium plates were even placed by surgeons to allow him to lead a normal life.
Determined to recover from this terrible incident and to continue his life as an actor, he resumed filming in Australian series such as Underbelly and Summer Bay in 2006 and 2008. He then continued in the series Rush between 2008 and 2011 which truly marks its big comeback on the small screen but also in the mini-series Bikie Wars: Brothers in Armsreleased in 2012.
The cinema finally opens the doors to him by offering him super-productions, in particular in Zero Dark Thirtyby Kathryn Bigelow, in 2012, in 300: Birth of an Empireby Noam Murro and in Captain America the Winter Soldierin 2014. In 2016, he played in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice where he embodies the role of Anatoly Knyazev, nicknamed KGBeast, head of the Russian mafia Solntsevskaya Bratva who works in particular as the Penguin’s henchman. The same year, he also played in the adaptation Warcraft: The Beginningan adaptation of Duncan Jones.
More recently, in 2020, he plays with Eva Green in the series The Luminaries and ins Shadow in the cloud alongside Chloë Moretz. In 2022, he will be in the film The Gray Man by Anthony and Joe Russo with Ryan Reynolds and Chris Evans.
Side heart, he is married to a teacher, Rachel Thomas, since December 2010.
