Wesley Brownlee was taken into custody on Saturday morning after “hunting” for another possible victim, local police chief Stanley McFadden said at a press conference.

“He was on a mission to kill,” the officer said, adding that Mr. Brownlee was carrying a gun when he was apprehended. “We are sure we have prevented another murder. »

Five men were killed in a Stockton neighborhood between July 8 and September 27 in partly similar circumstances. Another man was put to death in April 2021 in Oakland, 80 km west of Stockton.

The victims were between the ages of 21 and 54.

A woman survived an armed attack believed to have been carried out by Mr Brownlee.

Investigators are still trying to determine a possible motive.

The Californian city of Stockton, home to 350,000 people, is located about sixty kilometers south of the state capital, Sacramento.

Mr. Brownlee is expected to appear in court on Tuesday to be charged, local prosecutor Tori Verber Salazar said, adding that her office was reviewing the evidence to determine what charges will be brought against him.

“This crime was solved because we are residents of Stockton. Because we don’t come to us to make this kind of terror reign, ”said the magistrate.
