Calf tear | Ons Jabeur withdraws from Madrid

(Paris) Ons Jabeur, the fourth player in the world injured in the calf on Saturday at the Stuttgart tournament, announced on Monday that she would not defend her title at the WTA 1000 in Madrid this week.

“I have a small tear in my calf and I will need a little more time to recover,” said the Tunisian on her social networks: “I am sad to announce that I will not be able to play and defend my title” in Madrid.

On Saturday, Jabeur was injured in the first game in the semi-final in Stuttgart against world number one Iga Swiatek. After being treated, she had lasted two more games before giving up, with tears in her eyes.

Last year, the 28-year-old triumphed in Madrid by defeating American Jessica Pegula in the final.

Ons Jabeur had already injured her knee at the start of the year when she was eliminated in the second round of the Australian Open at the end of January. She had announced in early February that she was stopping to undergo a “minor operation”, and had made her return to competition in mid-March at the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells.
