The emotion and relief of being reunited after more than 20 hours stuck in a gondola. On the afternoon of Friday April 12, an extremely rare accident occurred on a cable car in Antalya, Turkey. A cabin is hit by a pylon, one person dies instantly. Ten others, including children, were injured. Rescuers gave them first aid before evacuating them by helicopter. But in the cable car trapped above the void, locked in cramped cabins, there remain 174 passengers.
Thirteen people in detention
An extremely dangerous evacuation operation began which would last, in total, more than 23 hours. All night and a good part of the day on Saturday April 13. Ten helicopters and 600 rescuers were mobilized. “We were very scared. Now I am calmer, but we screamed, we screamed”, confides one of the passengers. According to the Turkish authorities, the possible causes of the accident are significant corrosion and the poor condition of the pulleys. Thirteen people, including officials from the company operating the cable car, were taken into custody.
