(Los Angeles) Jason Day ended more than five years of drought on the North American PGA Tour, winning the Byron Nelson, thanks to a successful birdie on the last hole, during the fourth round played on Sunday near Dallas (Texas ).
The 35-year-old Australian, who was fourth the day before, two shots behind a leading trio including one of his two runners-up, Austin Eckroat, scored the best score of the day (62) at nine under par.
His birdie on the No. 18 was decisive, because it saved him from going through a hole against his American rival and the South Korean Si Woo Kim, who had done the same on this last hole.
The last trophy lifted by Day was the Wells Fargo Championship in May 2018. This is the 12e of her career.
“It was five complicated years, 1835 days to be exact. The way I played today was really special. I am very happy with the way things have improved over the past two years,” said the golfer, who suffered from a back injury.
One week before the PGA Championship, the second Grand Slam lifter of the season, world No. 2 Scottie Scheffler finished 5e three lengths from the winner.
