Martin. Well yes, Martin Matte… and the members of the CAQ government ate their black bread – not on sale at Maxi, moreover – during the Bye bye 2023who has concocted a plate of pop culture that’s tangy and just peppery enough.
At least, for the first hour service, efficient and funny. The final half hour was softer, we will come back to that.
The sketch where François Legault, played by Claude Legault, a classic for him, asked the Plan B company to go back in time to correct the errors of the third link was beautifully executed. A short, biting and punchy vignette just as we like them.
Just before, the pastiche of Hyundai’s WAH ads was enjoyable, with Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse in the role of Marilou, the queen of “three fwahs a day”. What a stupefying and stupid concept is that of “l’estie de WAH”, to paraphrase the text of Radio-Canada’s end-of-year review.
The devastating segment of Martin Matte in distress hit a painful nail for TVA: the failure of the talk show of the creator of Beautiful discomforts. Louis Morissette shone in this parody where he got stuck in his boxes and pretended to be interested in his guest Marthe Laverdière (excellent Guylaine Tremblay), who reframed the lost host.
Then, the final killer sentence: lemon or turnip, both, using the codes from the Maxi ad by Martin Matte. Bang, TKO.
To illustrate the housing crisis, a great idea to resurrect Rooms in town, where Louise Deschâtelets’ old pension welcomed her old tenants Pete (Francis Reddy), Julien (Gregory Charles) and Geneviève (Patricia Paquin), strangled by mortgage rates or evicted from their homes by greedy owners. I screamed when I saw Anne Dorval reprising her iconic role of Lola the Not Fine. A big blow. I screamed – even louder – when the team Bye brought back the character of Anne Dorval’s little toothless boy, seen for the first time in the Bye bye 2016. Crazy flash.
It must be emphasized: Pierre-Yves Roy-Desmarais was the star of this Bye bye 2023. First, his post-apocalyptic opening song set the tone for the evening, one that would pulverize and char big egos.
Then, the imitations of Pierre-Yves Roy-Desmarais, including the footballer Marc-Antoine Dequoy, were delirious, particularly his Louise Sigouin from “Si on s’aimerait”, even more off-the-wall than that of Marc Labrèche. His best? That of Jérémy Demay from the unbearable Meubles RD-Gueu ads.
It is not for nothing that Radio-Canada is urging Pierre-Yves Roy-Desmarais to succeed Louis-José Houde at the helm of ADISQ. He has all the qualities required to lead this gala.
Suggestion for the colorful song about the setbacks of REM, which was very Soly Club : the lyrics should have been added at the bottom of the screen to better understand them. And recruiting the flamboyant Patsy Gallant to bury him with the sound of the train is a perfect joke.
Minister Éric Caire, personified by Claude Legault, looked like a real pee-wee in the fake film “SAAQenheimer” about the nuclear fiasco of driving licenses and registrations.
Also liked that the Bye bye 2023 scratches the Tou.Tévé Extra section, your public broadcaster “just for those who pay”. The gag came up three times, with just as much acidity. No one will accuse director Simon-Olivier Fecteau of complacency here.
The New Look ad with Pierre Poilievre (Guylaine Tremblay), who gets rid of his glasses, embodied the spirit of everything Bye bye 2023 : skilfully put together scenes, without any fuss, which aim at the center of the target.
The fake news bulletin of Sophie Thibault (Guylaine Tremblay) and Patrice Roy (Pierre Brassard) contained a gem, the recording of the podcast show Listening by Mike Ward (Guylaine Tremblay, really funny) with the two taouins from The blue pocket, performed by Marc Dupré and Arnaud Soly. I would have taken more.
Among the less good moves of this flagship show, the inclusive rewriting of the Turkey Time by Roland Hi! Ha! Tremblay (Michel Barrette, as in the film December 23) was predictable and unfunny. Just like the parents’ bacon crisis over mixed bathrooms and non-binary teachers. It remained in the first degree.
The stupid student who uses ChatGPT and the electric bike, reworked with sauce Fast and dangerouswill not go down in history either.
The less tasty pieces of Bye bye 2023 were relegated after the happy new year countdown, including Green week (average), the Smackheads who visit the submarine Titan (meh!) or the long acting class of Bernard Drainville (very fair Patrick Huard), harsh towards the politician, but which would have benefited from being shortened.
One who must have sighed while watching the Bye bye 2023, it was Justin Trudeau, who was spared in each round. Apart from the nod to the film barbie and upon his separation from Sophie Grégoire (personified by Catherine Chabot), the Canadian Prime Minister dodged most of the blows. Would his boxing training finally help his political career?
