BYD Unveils New Electric Vehicle Competing with Peugeot E-2008: Reasons to Hold Off on Your Purchase

As 2024 approaches, BYD aims to challenge Tesla in the electric vehicle market, launching the Atto 2 compact SUV and the Sealion 7. The Atto 2, measuring 4.31 meters in length, features modern design elements and a spacious interior, accommodating five passengers. It offers a 176-horsepower motor, a range of 312 kilometers, and various tech features, including a touchscreen infotainment system. Initial deliveries are expected soon, with pricing around 30,000 euros in France.

As we approach 2024, BYD is poised to become a major contender in the electric vehicle market, just shy of overtaking Tesla in sales. Kicking off 2025 on a high note, this manufacturer, which boasts a workforce of over a million dedicated employees, is laser-focused on establishing itself as the global leader in electric mobility.

Introducing the Compact SUV

At the conclusion of 2024, during the Paris Motor Show, BYD introduced its latest model, the Sealion 7. Not stopping there, the company showcased the highly anticipated Atto 2 at the Brussels show in early 2025, a vehicle we had the privilege to explore in detail. This exciting new addition is a compact SUV, strategically placed below the recently updated Atto 3.

With a size of 4.31 meters in length, 1.83 meters in width, and standing 1.66 meters tall, the Atto 2 is designed to rival the new Renault 4 E-Tech and the well-established Peugeot e-2008. The visual appeal of this SUV is already evident, as BYD previously teased the public with official images. The front design features sleek, elongated LED headlights linked by a bold black strip that prominently displays the brand name, complemented by a solid grille that enhances aerodynamics.

The car’s striking front is matched by its well-crafted sides, showcasing a straight roofline that maximizes interior space, along with a subtle spoiler that adds to the aesthetic. The design is finished off with 17-inch alloy wheels, providing a modern touch. Buyers can choose from several vibrant colors, including the fresh Hiking Green, Skiing White, and Cosmos Black. The rear end is equally impressive, boasting an LED light signature that mimics an infinity symbol, ensuring visibility and style even in low-light conditions.

Optimized Driving Experience

The driving experience in the BYD Atto 2 remains consistent with what we have come to expect from the brand. We had the opportunity to step inside a few weeks ago, and the layout is reminiscent of the Atto 3, offering a clean and modern aesthetic. Unlike Tesla, the Atto 2 features an 8.8-inch instrument cluster positioned behind the steering wheel, paired with a touchscreen that ranges from 10.1 to 12.8 inches, based on the selected configuration.

This intuitive touchscreen supports connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with popular apps like Spotify, YouTube, and Amazon Music. The infotainment system can receive remote updates, ensuring that users always have the latest features. Additionally, the Atto 2 includes an induction charging pad for smartphones and multiple USB-C ports that support up to 60 W. The vehicle is also equipped with a voice command feature, “Hi BYD,” allowing easy management of air conditioning and window controls.

Despite its compact dimensions, the Atto 2 offers ample interior room, thanks to its 2.62-meter wheelbase. It comfortably accommodates five passengers and features a trunk with a remarkable volume ranging from 400 to 1,340 liters when the rear seats are folded down. Comfort is a priority in this SUV, with heated seats and a heated steering wheel available on the premium Boost trim.

Moreover, the Atto 2 comes equipped with a fun karaoke feature, allowing users to purchase an optional microphone to sing along to lyrics displayed on the screen, which can be oriented vertically or horizontally. Accessing and starting the vehicle is seamless thanks to a keyless entry system utilizing NFC technology, and users can also use a smartphone app for added convenience.

Impressive Range and Performance

The BYD Atto 2 features a single engine option aimed at simplifying the customer experience. This compact SUV is powered by a front motor delivering 130 kW, equivalent to 176 horsepower, along with a torque of 290 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a swift 7.9 seconds, with a top speed of 160 km/h, making it ideal for urban commuting.

Equipped with BYD’s innovative Blade LFP battery technology, the Atto 2 has a capacity of 45.12 kWh, providing a range of 312 kilometers in mixed driving conditions as per WLTP standards. Notably, this figure expands to an impressive 463 kilometers for urban driving scenarios.

Charging times are reasonable, requiring 37 minutes to go from 10% to 80% at a maximum charging power of 65 kW. While this is competitive, it falls short compared to rivals like the Jeep Avenger, which can achieve 20% to 80% in just 26 minutes at 100 kW. The Atto 2 also includes an 11 kW onboard charger for AC charging, enabling a full charge in approximately five and a half hours. Additionally, it features a heat pump and V2L bidirectional charging capabilities.

For those seeking greater range, BYD plans to introduce a version with a larger battery capacity, potentially offering around 420 km (mixed cycle) between charges, slated for release in 2025.

The initial deliveries for the “312 km” version are set to commence in the upcoming weeks, although pricing details for the French market are yet to be disclosed. It is anticipated to be priced around 30,000 euros, with a starting price of 29,990 euros in Spain, while the extended range version is projected to cost approximately 37,500 euros, aligning with market trends.
