BYD Unveils Affordable Electric Vehicle Priced at Half of Tesla Model 3

BYD is enhancing its electric vehicle lineup in China with the launch of the Qin L EV sedan, aimed at competing with the Tesla Model 3. This model features a sleek design, advanced technology including a 12.8-inch touchscreen, and two battery options offering up to 545 km of range. Priced competitively at 119,800 yuan, the Qin L EV showcases BYD’s strategy to challenge Tesla’s dominance in the electric vehicle market.

BYD Expands Its Electric Vehicle Range in China

While BYD is making strides in the European market with the introduction of models like the Atto 2 and Sea Lion 7, the company remains active in its home territory of China. As anticipation builds for the new Dolphin Surf’s arrival in Europe, BYD is busy diversifying its offerings in the Chinese automotive landscape.

Introducing the New BYD Qin L EV Sedan

The Shenzhen-based manufacturer is on a mission to dethrone Tesla and claim the title of the world’s leading electric vehicle producer. Recently, BYD launched its latest model, the Qin L EV, which is currently exclusive to the Chinese market. Following the releases of the Han L sedan and the Tang EV SUV, the Qin L EV adds another dynamic option to BYD’s electric sedan lineup.

Positioned as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3, the Qin L EV is part of BYD’s Dynasty series and offers impressive dimensions, measuring 4.72 meters in length, 1.88 meters in width, and 1.50 meters in height. Official images released on BYD’s Weibo page showcase its sleek design, which shares stylistic elements with other models in the lineup, including the Han.

The sedan features a distinctive front end with connected headlights, a sloped hood, and a solid grille optimized for aerodynamic performance. The side profile reveals a classic silhouette complemented by a gently sloping roofline. At the rear, an LED light strip creates a modern signature that extends slightly onto the sides.

Inside the BYD Qin L EV, drivers are greeted by a state-of-the-art 12.8-inch touchscreen that integrates the sophisticated DiLink infotainment system. While it incorporates artificial intelligence, compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto has yet to be confirmed. Additionally, the vehicle includes an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch head-up display, along with a 50 W wireless smartphone charging pad. The trunk offers a generous 460 liters of storage space, complemented by a 65-liter front trunk.

The Qin L EV utilizes the innovative e-Platform 3.0 EVO developed by BYD, featuring a wheelbase of 2.82 meters. Available in two power options, it delivers either 148 or 215 horsepower, with torque ratings of 220 and 330 Nm, respectively. This performance allows the sedan to sprint from 0 to 50 km/h in just 4.1 and 3.1 seconds.

Two Blade LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) battery options are offered for the Qin L EV, with capacities of 46.08 kWh and 56.64 kWh, providing a maximum range of up to 545 kilometers based on the Chinese CLTC cycle. This translates to approximately 463 kilometers under the WLTP certification. For comparison, the entry-level Tesla Model 3 boasts a range of 554 kilometers. The Qin L’s charging capabilities allow it to reach 30 to 80% in just 24 minutes, although this may be seen as a drawback. However, it impressively claims a consumption rate of only 10.8 kWh per 100 km.

The new sedan is equipped with BYD’s God’s Eye C autonomous driving system, recently unveiled by the company. While it lacks a LiDAR sensor, which is available in other variants, it relies on camera systems similar to those used by Tesla. Future OTA updates are expected to enhance its capabilities, including features like navigational memory.

Currently, the BYD Qin L EV is available in Chinese dealerships, starting at a competitive price of 119,800 yuan (approximately 15,300 euros). However, if this model makes its way to Europe, the price is likely to increase significantly due to high customs tariffs. Additionally, it may not qualify for ecological bonuses unless produced in Hungary, as is the case with the Atto 2. In contrast, the Tesla Model 3 starts at 230,000 yuan (about 29,000 euros) in China, highlighting BYD’s intention to make a substantial impact in the electric vehicle market.
