By August 1, 2024, humanity has consumed all the resources that the Earth can renew in one year.

Globally, “overshoot day” would fall this year on Thursday, 1er August, 24 hours earlier than last year, according to the NGO Global Footprint Network.

Humanity will have consumed by Thursday all the resources that the Earth can renew in a year, according to calculations made by the NGO Global Footprint Network and York University, located in Toronto.

These calculations indicate that at this rate, humans would need 1.7 planets to support themselves.

But not all humans consume the same amount of resources.

Thus, Canadians are among those who have consumed their biological resources the fastest.

In Canada, the overshoot day was March 15, as were the United States and the United Arab Emirates, two other major oil producers.

Only two countries, Qatar and Luxembourg, did worse than Canada, according to calculations by the NGO Global Footprint Network and the University of York.

Earth Overshoot Day is calculated by dividing the planet’s biocapacity (the amount of ecological resources the Earth is capable of generating that year) by humanity’s Ecological Footprint (humanity’s demand for that year) and multiplying by 365, which is the number of days in a year.
