In Russian President Vladimir Putin’s own words to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, “Russia is open to dialogue with the Ukrainian side, as well as with all those who want peace in Ukraine, but on condition that all Russian requirements be
satisfied”.
But what are Vladimir Putin’s demands? A “neutral and non-nuclear” status for Ukraine, its “compulsory demilitarization” and its “denazification”, the recognition of the annexation of the Crimean peninsula by Russia and the “sovereignty” of the pro-Russian separatist regions of eastern Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk, in their administrative territories, while the rebels currently control only a third of them.
But what dialogue is the Russian president referring to when he makes the acceptance of all his demands conditional on a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine? Where is Ukrainian President Volodymyr’s real leeway?
Zelensky?
In reality, under the conditions imposed by Putin, no dialogue is possible. The chain of communication is broken to make way for a monologue demanding nothing less than the capitulation of the capital, Kiev, without firing a shot!
