Even if he did not achieve his goal, Samuel Finn still draws a lot of positives from this experience.
As of Saturday, this event allowed him to raise $54,500 for the Cerdres Cancer Foundation of the McGill University Health Center (MUHC). This money will go directly into research into this disease which killed his brother Cédric at the age of 27.
“It is certain that I am disappointed with the result, because I did not achieve my objective. I’m focusing on the positive, because the support from the community was incredible. It means a lot to me and people have been generous with the fundraising. But in terms of the feat itself, it’s certain that I have a little bitter taste,” declared the 32-year-old athlete during a telephone interview with the QMI Agency, a few minutes after his Saturday performance.
“I gave everything I could and I wanted to show that we are capable of persevering and going through challenges. My body wanted to give up on me, but I continued to persevere,” he added.
In order to achieve this feat, he would have had to perform 17 burpees per minute. Finn still managed on average almost 14 repetitions per 60 seconds.
“After the first 15 minutes, I felt like I was going to fall outside my pace, but despite that, I managed to keep up with it for about ten minutes. However, around the 25th minute I lost my pace that I had to follow.
Energy management
The man who broke a Guinness record in 2019 with 5,234 burpees in 12 hours admitted that his challenge on Saturday was completely different from the one done four years ago.
“I had very few breaks so it was more difficult. But for this record if I had no room for maneuver. […] When I did my 12 hours I had breaks so I never felt out of breath to the point where I wasn’t able to drink and eat because I had three 10 minute breaks to eat », Underlined the man who played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2007 to 2012.
A second attempt?
The Quebecer affirmed that he was not closing the door on repeating this challenge and this time breaking the mark of 1010 burpees in 60 minutes.
“The athlete in me wants to try this challenge again. On the other hand, I will still be resting for the next two weeks and also my partner and I are expecting our first child. Of course I want to do this challenge again, but I will see with time.”
