(Rangoon) Floods and severe weather caused by the typhoon Yagi have left 384 dead in Burma, while 89 people are missing, according to a new report released Saturday by the ruling junta.
The typhoon Yagi crossed Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Burma more than a week ago, causing floods and landslides that have killed hundreds in total in these four countries.
The floods have worsened the precariousness in Myanmar, where millions of people have been displaced by more than three years of conflict between rebels and junta forces since the military seized power in a 2021 coup.
Last weekend, the junta issued an unusual appeal for international aid.
According to the UN, 887,000 people in Burma were affected by the typhoon.
“The worst-affected areas remain devastated, with widespread destruction of homes, property, water sources and electricity infrastructure,” the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Saturday.
“Roads, bridges, communication networks, schools, public services, places of worship, crops and agricultural land have been severely damaged or completely destroyed,” Ocha added.
