Pizzas, chocolate and cheese. Within days, a series of dangerous bacteria were discovered in France. Are the controls sufficient in our food industry?

Production lines stopped by prefectural decision. Since April 1, this Buitoni factory, in the north of France, no longer produces pizzas. Sanitary inspections revealed serious deficiencies in food hygiene such as the presence of rodents or insufficient air extraction.

The cause: the E.coli bacteria. 58 children fell ill, two of whom died after having ingested a Buitoni pizza. The Nestlé factory, however, claims to carry out more than 10,000 self-checks each week. “There are fewer and fewer resources allocated to the supervisory authorities. This opens the door to abuse”, says Karine Jacquemart, General Manager Foodwatch France. Several products have been the subject of food recalls in recent days, including Kinder chocolates suspected of causing salmonellosis.
