Drought: Building permits at a standstill
Drought: Building permits at a standstill
(France 2)

This is a new consequence of the drought that is hitting the country: some mayors fear that they will not provide enough drinking water for all the inhabitants. In the Var, a councillor has decided to suspend building permits.

In the Var, some cities are in full development, but suffer from a lack of water. Thus, several municipalities have given a negative opinion on new building permits. Last summer, several communities had to be supplied with drinking water by tanker truck. Construction professionals are worried about the bans, while residents are mixed.

Before the freeze on building permits, around forty applications were filed each year compared to five today. “There was urgency because we were in a situation where we could imagine water cuts in the fairly short term at the time of the decision”assures a mayor of the department. The Var, like the Bouches-du-Rhône or the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, has been suffering from periods of intense drought and fires for several years.
