Champagne producers are worried: they are sorely lacking caps for their corks, a direct consequence of the war in Ukraine and the aluminum shortage.

Popping the cork off a bottle of champagne: a moment to share with family or friends. But bubble wine producers are not at the party, they are starting to worry about the shortage of certain packaging. “Alumina, which is used to make aluminum, comes from Ukraine“, says Marjorie Navarre-Vrayet, champagne producer. The cap that wraps the cork is a symbol of champagne, but it also has a fiscal value, since it allows the producer to justify that he has paid his taxes.

And for the small producers who multiply the cuvées, new packaging must be found, different from that which they usually use. These are new constraints for winegrowers, while champagne sales are on the rise again. Another difficulty: finding enough glass. A large part of the production was based in Ukraine, the professionals are in uncertainty. Serial shortages that could impact the price, with bubbles becoming more expensive by the end of the year.
