Bruno Studer, Renaissance MP, has tabled a law to raise parents’ awareness of their children’s image rights

1.3 million subscribers. At only 4 years old, Tiago Tanti is already overshadowing his dad and his mom. But if the boy has been a regular on social networks since birth, he is not the only one to suffer from overexposure. To this day, most parents proudly share photos of their children. From Instagram to Facebook via Snapchat, the platforms have become a veritable gold mine for pedophiles.

Bruno Studer, Renaissance deputy for Bas-Rhin, has therefore tabled a bill to raise parents’ awareness of their child’s image rights, because, according to BFM TV, “This virtual social life can have very dangerous consequences in reality.”

“50% of images on child pornography forums were originally posted by parents”

Interviewed by our colleagues, Thomas Rohmer, director of the Observatory of parenthood and digital education, spoke about the dangers of this practice. “We do know that on the internet, there are a certain number of people who are not necessarily very frequent people and who can very well exploit its content for the purposes of child pornography”. In effect, “50% of the images on child pornography forums were initially posted by parents on social networks, according to MP Renaissance. And no matter how much you delete them from your account, nothing disappears from the internet…”specifies BFM TV.

For his part, Socheata Sim, member of the Caméléon association, also thinks that the overexposure of children on the networks is a risk for their future. Apart from child pornography, it is a matter of “reputation” who is at stake. “They can be teased by their comrades if they find old ‘photo files’. It can have an impact on their well-being, on a psychological level and on their self-esteem as well”. It remains to be seen whether the MP’s project will see the light of day…
