No less than eight films with Bruce Willis are in the running this year for the Razzie Awards, the anti-Oscars which make fun of Hollywood trophies by pinning the worst films of the year. The organizers of this satirical list therefore naturally felt compelled to create a dedicated category for the 66-year-old actor, entitled “Bruce Willis’ worst performances in a film of 2021”..
In these works, generally very low budget and broadcast only in streaming, the star of the saga diehard and legendary movies like Sixth Sense and pulp Fiction takes on roles as original as disillusioned sheriff, former policeman, retired general or former CIA agent. None of these films, where Bruce Willis often appears only very briefly but which he actively promotes, won more than 20% positive reviews on the site Rotten Tomatoes (translation: “rotten tomatoes”) which aggregates ratings from different sources.
Rare performance, three of these films (American Headquarters, Apex and out of death) have a score of 0% from critics. The film that won the most nominations on Monday February 7 is the recording of a musical devoted to Princess Diana and broadcast on Netflix, to critical acclaim. The film is in the running in nine categories, including that of the worst feature film. The musical itself only ran on Broadway for 33 performances.
Actor Jared Leto also got noticed by the Razzies for his exuberant performance and improbable Italian accent in House of Gucci. He is notably selected in the category of “worst couple on screen” under the heading “Jared Leto and CHOICE his 8 kg latex face, his geek clothes or his ridiculous accent”. These mockeries should not prevent the actor from appearing on the list of nominations for the Oscar for best supporting actor which must be unveiled Tuesday, February 7.
Among the other celebrities pinned by the Razzie Awards is NBA star LeBron James, for the sequel to space jam. The “Golden Raspberry Awards”, the official name of the Razzies, were invented in a Los Angeles living room in 1981 by former film students and Hollywood professionals. The lucky winners receive a trophy representing a raspberry the size of a golf ball placed on a reel of Super 8 film. The winners will be announced the day before the Oscars ceremony, on March 26.
