Bruce Cassidy fired by Bruins

Shock wave in Boston: Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy was relieved of his duties on Monday.

Bruins general manager Don Sweeney made the announcement in a press release. Cassidy had been in charge of the team since February 7, 2017.

“Today I announced to Bruce Cassidy that we have decided to change our head coach,” Sweeney said. After 14 years of working with Bruce, it’s an extremely difficult decision.

“His record as a Bruins pilot is impressive. We appreciate him both professionally and personally. After thinking about it, I felt that our team needed a new voice in the future.

Cassidy posted a 245-108-46 record at the helm for the Bruins. Under his leadership, the “Oursons” reached the Eastern Conference final in 2019, the year he won the Jack-Adams trophy, awarded to the best head coach on the circuit.

“I want to thank Bruce for everything he’s done for the Bruins organization,” President Cam Neely said. He was a fantastic coach who allowed this team to win several games.

The Bruins have indicated they will begin the process to find his replacement immediately.

“I fully trust Don to find the best candidate to help this team reach their full potential,” Neely concluded.

A former National Hockey League defenseman, Cassidy worked behind the bench for the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League from 2008 to 2016.
