(Brossard) Two thieves allegedly tried to steal “thousands” of liters of gasoline from a Brossard gas station on the night of Monday to Tuesday, but their plan was thwarted by the police who arrived in time to prevent them to leave the scene with their loot.
According to the Longueuil Agglomeration Police Service (SPAL), the suspects poured the gasoline into large cans and placed these cans in a cube truck. Without specifying the exact quantity, the police force spoke of “thousands” of liters.
Around 2:15 a.m., however, the police caught the thieves in the act. One of them, aged 19, was arrested on the spot, while the other fled on foot and was still being sought on Tuesday morning.
The young man who was arrested was placed in detention and will be interviewed by investigators from the Longuillois police force. He has no history with SPAL, it was clarified, and he could face a charge of theft of more than $5,000.
The other suspect, whose age was not specified, was still at large as of morning. The SPAL continued its operation to find him, with the help of a dog handler from the Sûreté du Québec.
The truck containing the gasoline cans was recovered by the police, who set up a security perimeter around the scene of the theft to analyze it.
The gas station was open at the time of the theft. It mainly serves trucks for business customers.
