British comedian Vanessa Redgrave received her title of ‘Dame’ from Prince William

Her thousands of fans will now be able to call her Lady Vanessa Redgrave! The famous 85-year-old British actress was ennobled on Thursday October 13, 2022 by Williamthe Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace. “You can’t compare being part of an investiture at Buckingham Palace with any other accomplishment, whatever it is. It’s unique,” she told the agency PA News Agency.

The title of “Dame”, the highest honor of the Order of the British Empire, was awarded to her for services to the dramatic arts. Vanessa Redgrave is given the same honors as her father, Sir Michael Redgrave, also an actor.

The announcement of his ennoblement had been made in January. The actress had then entrusted to be “surprised and grateful to join this wonderful group of British artists whose works [l]have inspired, as well as audiences around the world”.

The actress, recalls the BBC, is considered one of the greatest of her generation. Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1977 for her performance in Julia (1977), where she shares the poster with the American Jane Fonda, Vanessa Redgrave has to her credit six Oscar nominations. Among his films are Mary, Queen of Scots (Mary Stuart: Queen of Scotland2018), Howards Ends (Return to Howards Ends, 1992) or Mrs Dalloway (1997).

Vanessa Redgrave is part of the very select club of actors who hold an Oscar (cinema), an Emmy (television) and a Tony (theater). On television, we have seen her in the American series Nip/Tuck.

Vanessa Redgrave finally accepted the title she had declined in the late 1990s. She explained it in the columns of the American magazine The Hollywood Reporter.

“I am not against the royal family (…) It is not the royal family or the queen who offers the honor, it is the government in place. So I would never say that I refused an honor from the Queen. But I couldn’t and wouldn’t accept any honor from Mr. Blair, when he led our country, and so many people, into war on the basis of a lie.” The artist blamed the former British Prime Minister for dragging his country into the war against Iraq. Dame Vanessa Redgrave has never made a secret of the fact that she was a woman of conviction.
