British Columbia | Number of wildfires continues to decline in British Columbia

The number of “out of control” wildfires continues to decline in British Columbia following a cold front that brought rain and fall temperatures to many areas.

About 280 fires are still active in the province, of which 15%, or just over 40, are considered “out of control.”

This is a decrease from last week, when more than 100 fires were considered “out of control.”

None of the current fires are considered “notable wildfires,” meaning a fire is highly visible or poses a threat to people or infrastructure.

The open fire ban was lifted in many areas Wednesday, but the BC Wildfire Service is still urging people to exercise caution.

Anyone lighting a campfire should maintain a firebreak by removing flammable debris, have enough water available to extinguish the fire and never leave flames unattended, the BC Wildfire Service says in a social media post.

Campfires should not exceed 0.5 metres in height and 0.5 metres in width.
