Between 70% and 80% of children in Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley have contracted COVID-19, according to a study involving the chief medical officer of British Columbia.
Released on Friday, the yet-to-be-peer-reviewed preliminary study finds the infection rate among adults aged 20 to 59 is 60% to 70%, while it’s around 40% among those aged 60 and more.
The daily balance sheets of infections have been underestimated, since according to the study the real number of COVID-19 infections in the two major regions considered could be 92 times higher.
The study conducted by 13 experts reports that the overall rate of infected people increased by 15% to 60% between October 2021 and August, in the midst of the spread of the Omicron variant among the population.
The authors of the study stress that fears about the lack of protective measures in schools, such as the wearing of masks, were justified, according to what CP24 reported on Tuesday.
