British Columbia calls for water conservation as watershed levels drop

The BC government is asking people to take shorter showers and find other ways to save water as provincial officials monitor worsening drought conditions.

Emergency Management Minister Bowinn Ma said her ministry has observed that half of B.C.’s 34 watersheds have already reached level four in the province’s drought classification system. This means that adverse effects from lower water supplies are likely and regulatory measures such as watering restrictions are possible.

Level five is the maximum dryness classification for this system.

The drought also brought conditions that led to a record wildfire season in British Columbia, prompting a campfire ban order in all areas of the province except of Haida Gwaii, an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean off Prince Rupert.
