Eurozapping: Britain goes to war against tobacco, Spain prepares for summer
(Franceinfo)
Like every evening, the 11 p.m. news news takes a look at the news broadcast by European television channels. It’s Eurozapping on Tuesday April 16.
Britain wants a law to ban cigarettes for life. 80,000 people die each year and tobacco-related illnesses cost more than 17 billion euros. Against this scourge, the British government is proposing a cure. A total ban on sales for those under 15 and which will increase by one year each year, to create a tobacco-free generation. “People are trapped very young and when they become addicted, they no longer have a choice”, underlines Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England. A law that some consider liberticidal. Despite the opposition of some deputies, it has just been adopted.
Public swimming pools against the heatwave in Catalonia
In Georgia, the foreign influence law is back in parliament. The monster demonstrations don’t change anything. The majority party wants to bring the media and NGOs into line. In Georgia, a year after the violent rejection of this text by the population, the leader of the parliament, recovered from his blow, returns to the attack: “Media and non-governmental organizations, which receive almost 20% of their income from abroad each year, must be registered as an organization pursuing the interests of a foreign power”. The Georgians, who aspire to a rapprochement with the European Union, are ready to fight.
Meanwhile, Spain is preparing for summer. Catalonia has just announced that in the event of a heatwave and extreme drought, only swimming pools open to the public will be authorized. Private pools will have to remain empty, while the country expects a record influx of tourists this summer. Hotels have already found the solution: desalinated water. New factories are expected to be built in Catalonia in the coming years.
