Tuesday, April 5, Tunisians are experiencing shortages of oil and flour as a result of the war in Ukraine. The bread is starting to run out.

In Tunisia, flour stocks are rationed on Tuesday, April 5, the 41st day of war in Ukraine. The inhabitants lack bread and Tunisia no longer receives wheat from Ukraine, its main supplier. A Tunisian baker, who prefers to testify anonymously, denounces a lack of flour provided by the state. The cost of a baguette has doubled from 6 to 12 euro cents. “It’s a maximum of four baguettes per person”explains Siwar Tlili, a baker, forced to ration her customers.

In Tunisia, the shortage also affects oil and flour. “The state no longer has the means to buy in large quantities and therefore it is managing sparingly, hoping that prices will come down”, explains Hassen Zargouni, director of the SIGMA design office. Tunisia grows cereals, but rather durum wheat, used for semolina or pasta and not soft wheat.
