Brazilian player Marta had a memorable outing on Wednesday, July 31, on the pitch at the Stade de Bordeaux, but not necessarily for the right reasons. The Brazilian football legend, who is participating in her sixth Olympic Games, was sent off for a very dangerous move during the group match Brazil-Spain (0-2), Wednesday, July 31. The 38-year-old player immediately burst into tears, while she is most likely playing her last tournament with the Brazilian team.

At the end of the first half, the one who is considered one of the best players of all time, committed a huge foul. Marta threw her foot at the head of her Spanish opponent, Olga Carmona. The latter was hit in the back of the head, but the facts could have been much more serious, if she had received the blow in the face.

The Brazilian player then receives a red card and has to leave the field. That’s when Marta crouches down and bursts into tears. It takes her a few seconds to get up and leave, accompanied by her teammates.

The 38-year-old was very emotional, and rightly so. The legendary number 10 had announced last April that she would stop playing with the Brazilian national team after the end of the Olympic Games. Marta risks one or more match suspensions. She will not be able to participate in the quarter-final against France, who qualified after their victory against New Zealand on Wednesday evening (2-0). The Brazilian legend therefore risks no longer wearing the iconic Auriverde jersey.

Marta Vieira da Silva, her real name, has was voted the best female player in the world six times by FIFA, between 2006 and 2018. She also won two Olympic silver medals, at the 2004 Games in Athens and the 2008 Games in Beijing.
