Brantôme salmon farming in a troglodyte cave

Salmon farming in Brantôme was created in the 1920s. Taken over in 2002, it is the result of a partnership between the town hall of Brantôme and the Dordogne Federation for Fishing and the Protection of the Aquatic Environment. Its particularity is its installation in a troglodyte cave, unique in France. In this site, fry of fario trout of local strains are raised which serve to support the fario populations throughout the department. They grow up in spring water, the same that flows from the Saint Sicaire fountain located a hundred meters away and which is said to have real healing properties.

? Listen to Maxime, technician on this salmon farm:

“Raised in spring water with numerous virtues, this may be why our fry never get sick.”

The water varies between 10 and 13 degrees. This is a temperature that is perfect for the development of trout. Between 300,000 and 400,000 fingerlings are produced there each year. For the happiness of many fishermen.
