Boycott the FIFA World Cup in Qatar? Toulouse residents are mobilizing

Toulouse football fans are mobilizing to denounce the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. This world, which begins in less than two months, is controversial for its ecological impact and for the conditions in which the stadiums were built.

It is an event that will be followed by millions of people around the world: the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The competition will take place from November 20 to December 18. But for some time, voices have been rising to denounce this World Cup which will be played in air-conditioned stadiums and which has cost the lives of many workers on the construction sites. According to a survey published in 2021 by the British daily The Guardian, more than 6,500 migrant workers died on stadium construction sites of Qatar since 2010. Personalities like Eric Cantona, Vikash Dhorasso, football clubs like Offenheim, which plays in the German first division, or certain media like The Daily of Reunion stepped up and announced that they would boycott the competition.

Faced with this observation, people from Toulouse are mobilizing to denounce this football world cup, like Pascal Costello, a TFC supporter who is taking part in the “Pour un Autre Football” project: “Discussing with friends, we said to ourselves There had been things to reproach the World Cup in Brazil, the World Cup in Russia, but there, 6,500 deaths were announced on the construction sites of the stadiums in Qatar: that represents approximately one death per minute of game planned during the World Cup. For us, it was not acceptable to remain inactive. We thought, as you say at the beginning, of boycotting these matches. Then we said to ourselves, can we do something? Can we take advantage of this context to talk to each other, to meet people, for.
