Boxing | No retirement in sight for Anthony Joshua

(Jeddah) British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua does not plan to hang up his gloves, even if he loses again to Oleksandr Usyk this week, he told AFP.

At 32, Joshua is still hoping to reclaim the national titles he lost in September 2021 to Ukrainian Usyk, winner on points and unanimously in their last fight in London.

After this defeat, experts saw him stop his career. “I didn’t lose to a nerd. It’s crazy to think I should retire,” Anthony Joshua told AFP ahead of Saturday’s rematch in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

“I want to stay in the competition. I love that. It’s demanding, but I love the challenge,” added the heavyweight Olympic gold medalist, who says he is “in competition” with one of the most gifted fighters of all categories.

Joshua, who remains one of the best boxers in the world, has been less sparkling in recent years, especially since his surprise defeat in 2019 against Andy Ruiz Jr. He had however taken his revenge a few months later and will certainly want to do the same against Oleskandr Usyk.
