Launched last Friday on nearly 230 screens across the province, Dune: Part Twoeasily rose to the top of the Quebec box office by collecting $1,862,192 during its first three days on display, according to data from the Cinéac agency. This is, by far, the best start of the year in Quebec cinemas.

“The messiah has arrived and he is from Quebec too!,” rejoiced the co-president of the Association of Quebec Cinema Owners, Éric Bouchard, referring to the slow start to the year at the box office.

“It’s a very strong start. The good news is that I think [Dune: deuxième partie] will be on display for a very long time. I walked outside the theaters on Thursday and Friday and heard nothing but superlatives about the film. That’s great for word of mouth. »

As with our neighbors to the South, Dune: Part Two completely crushed the competition in Quebec theaters, alone taking 71.6% of the total box office. For comparison, the film Bob Marley: One Lovewhich is in second place, only earned $140,878 over the weekend.

It’s quite rare to see a film collect nearly $2 million in its first weekend on screen in Quebec. The popular comedy barbie is one of the most recent productions to have achieved this feat, raising $2,043,648 in its first weekend in theaters across the province, last July.

Released in October 2021, the first film in the saga Dune had raised $1.1 million in Quebec theaters during its first weekend on screen.

A summit for Villeneuve

Acclaimed by critics all over the world, Dune: Part Two wreaked havoc at the worldwide box office during its first few days in theaters. Denis Villeneuve’s film grossed $81.5 million at the North American box office during its first weekend in theaters, more than double the amount amassed by the first film in the saga when it opened in October. 2021.

Worldwide, the film has already grossed over $178 million after just a few days on screen. This is the best start to Denis Villeneuve’s career to date.

Remember that the first part of the saga based on the literary work of Frank Herbert generated more than $400 million at the global box office when it was released in theaters in fall 2021.
