A beautiful paper, very white, a book well bound with a thick cover and which is imposingly displayed at the head of a bookstore: it is to keep this promise to consumers and the economic model that goes with it, that each year 20% of the books produced end up destroyed or stored.

The book has a weight on the forests for the pulp it consumes. Like other everyday objects, the book is now almost exclusively produced far from France, in Asia for example for children’s editions. Result: a lot of transport, and a random check.

From school books whose edition is renewed every five years according to the WWF association, to children’s books which extol the virtues of ecology but are produced in China, why is the book industry not more virtuous? ?

Each year, 50 million new books are sent to the pestle. Because to water the market and fill the shelves, publishing maintains a chronic system of overproduction. And then by dint of globalization, the know-how for manufacturing was lost.

But in France, some are mobilizing to make books with recycled paper, in short circuit, and with more respectful practices for forests.
