Dany Laferrière receives the Grand Prix des Ambassadeurs francophones
The Grand Prix des Ambassadeurs francophones was awarded to Dany Laferrière, last week in Paris, for his Short treatise on racismpublished in Quebec in 2021 by Boréal and in France last year by Grasset (under the title A short treatise on racism in America). This prize rewards each year a work written in French by an author belonging to a member country of the Francophonie, on the theme of international relations, political affairs or history.

Roxanne Bouchard awarded again in France

Quebecer Roxanne Bouchard won the Mystère de la critique prize this week in France for her thriller The Coral Bride, second investigation with his character Joaquin Moralès published here by Libre Expression in 2020 (and overseas by Éditions de l’Aube). This is her second award in France, since last year she received the Quai du Polar JDD Readers’ Prize at the famous Lyon festival for the first title in her series, We were the salt of the seaas well as a special mention.

Éric Chacour’s novel continues its flight

Selected this week among the finalists for the Prix des libraires du Québec, the highly acclaimed first novel by Éric Chacour, What I know about you (Alto), is also in the running for the Booksellers Prize in France, as well as the Aznavour Prize for Words of Love, which “celebrates love in contemporary literature”. Éric Chacour will also participate in a virtual workshop organized by the Félix Literary Camp, on February 22, on his writing process, and will be visiting the Outaouais Book Fair which will be held from February 22 to 25 at the Palais des Gatineau conference.

Catherine Leroux conquers English Canada

The Futurethe English translation of The future, Catherine Leroux’s fourth uchronic novel (published by Alto in 2020), found itself among the five finalists in the prestigious Canada Reads, the CBC’s annual book battle. And it will be defended by another Quebec author, Montrealer Heather O’Neill. The debates will take place from March 4 to 7.

A new Armand Gamache next fall
Louise Penny a dévoilé tout récemment à ses fans le titre de la 19e enquête de son célèbre enquêteur Armand Gamache, ainsi qu’un aperçu de l’intrigue. The Grey Wolf doit paraître en anglais le 29 octobre, mais la traduction française pourrait peut-être sortir simultanément, a-t-elle précisé. Une vidéo a même été créée pour présenter la couverture du roman qui commence par des appels insistants venus troubler la quiétude d’un chaud dimanche matin du mois d’août, à Three Pines. Mais ce ne serait là que le début d’une série d’évènements étranges qui entraîneront Armand Gamache, son bras droit Jean-Guy Beauvoir et l’inspectrice Isabelle Lacoste dans la province et même de l’autre côté des frontières.

Une résidence d’écriture au Cégep de Jonquière
Le Cégep de Jonquière a lancé une résidence d’écriture automnale d’une durée de 10 semaines. Dotée d’une bourse de 15 000 $, elle permettra à un écrivain ou à une écrivaine de profiter d’un espace dans la bibliothèque du cégep pour travailler sur un projet personnel de création et échanger avec la communauté collégiale. L’appel de candidatures est ouvert à tout le monde, mais l’hébergement n’est pas inclus. La date limite pour poser sa candidature est le 1er mars.

La doudou arrive en France

La doudou, personnage créé par Claudia Larochelle et illustré par Maira Chiodi, fera prochainement la rencontre des petits Français. Près de 10 ans après son apparition, la série aimée des tout-petits d’ici sera publiée dans l’Hexagone. Les éditions Auzou ont récemment acquis les droits d’édition du premier titre, La doudou qui ne sentait pas bon. « C’est un honneur et une grande chance pour moi, et pour Maira Chiodi, qui illustre merveilleusement mon personnage depuis les débuts. […] I hope that French children will appreciate it, draw pleasure and comfort from it,” rejoiced Claudia Larochelle in a press release. In Quebec, the series, which includes 12 albums, has sold some 200,000 copies. The next title, The cuddly toy that was lost almost foreverwill be released in bookstores on March 28.

Record year for Reading as a Gift

In 2023, more than 175,000 children will have received a book through the Gift of Reading program. This is a record for this initiative of the Literacy Foundation which aims to offer new books free of charge to young people aged 0 to 12 from disadvantaged backgrounds. “It’s an excellent way to put children in contact with books and thus develop their interest in reading,” said the Minister of Education, Bernard Drainville, in a press release. In 25 years, the Foundation has donated more than 1.3 million new books.
