Body found in river near Ross Island, Akwesasne

A body was found in the St. Lawrence River near Ross Island on Monday afternoon, Akwesasne Mohawk Police said.

The police department is awaiting confirmation from the coroner’s office as to the person’s identity.

The body was found around 2 p.m. near the island, which is located in Ontario. The territory of Akwesasne straddles Quebec, Ontario, Canada, and New York State, United States.

In March, a group of migrants, Romanian and Indian families, died trying to cross to the United States by crossing the St. Lawrence River by boat. Their bodies had all been found.

At the time, police were still looking for Casey Oakes, a 30-year-old Akwesasne resident, who was last seen March 29 at the controls of a boat that was found near the body.
