(OTTAWA) Women made up about 19% of board seats in 2019, Statistics Canada said Wednesday, up from about 18% the year before, even though the total number of board positions on boards of directors has declined.

According to the federal agency, data indicates that the proportion of women on corporate boards has increased at an average annual rate of 2.5% each year since 2016.
The dataset on which she bases her observations contains information from 7,165 companies, a decrease from the 8,697 companies that provided figures in 2018.
The number of women holding a position on a board of directors has actually decreased by 10.6%, but the decrease in the total number of directors has been even more pronounced, at 14.4%.
More than 4,300 women held board seats in 2019, up from 4,848 a year earlier. However, the decrease in the total number of positions was even greater, from 26,416 in 2018 to 22,605 the following year.
