BMW Championship | Patrick Cantlay champion again

(Wilmington) Patrick Cantlay won the BMW Championship again after an emotional tournament, defeating Scott Stallings by one stroke on Sunday.

Posted at 7:30 p.m.

He obtained a favorable jump on 17e hole that allowed him to birdie and take the lead. He handed a card of 69 (-2) in the final round.

Cantlay became the first golfer to win the BMW Championship two years in a row since the FedEx Cup playoffs were introduced.

It was on a different course, however, and he didn’t need six holes in overtime to clinch the title. Also, he will not start at the top of the last stage of the FedEx Cup, the Circuit Championship, disputed next week.

All that mattered was winning on the Wilmington Country Club course, but he needed a little help.

Tied at 17e pennant, his tee shot first bounced in the long grass, then went over the bunker, bounced again in the long grass before returning to the fairway.

“I hit a lot of good shots and had a couple of pretty lucky moments,” said Cantlay. This stroke of luck was not something I had anticipated. It was important for me to take advantage of it. »

Cantlay did not let the opportunity slip away. His approach shot brought him five feet from the cut and the birdie was a normality.

Last year, he made a decisive putt after an hour of overtime against Bryson DeChambeau at the Caves Valley course. He had thus seized the first position of the FedEx Cup.

Whoever leads the standings at the start of the FedEx Cup is entitled to a two-stroke priority. Cantlay seized his chance and defeated Jon Rahm by one shot to clinch the $18 million purse.

This time, he will enter the final stage of the FedEx Cup in the second echelon and will have to close a two-shot gap on Scottie Scheffler, winner of the Masters Tournament.

Scheffler and Xander Schauffele finished the competition tied for third, three strokes behind the leader.

Canadian Corey Conners (69), who was only a shot behind the leader before the start of the weekend rounds, finished the event four strokes behind Cantlay. He clinched fifth position.

Fellow Canadian Taylor Pendrith (69) tied for eighth, one stroke behind Conners.

Canada was also represented by Adam Hadwin (72) and Mackenzie Hughes (72).
