Blue Jays lose close game to Red Sox

(Boston) Alex Verdugo homered in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 on Monday night to end a nine-game losing streak against the Blue Jays.


Emmanuel Valdez hit his first major league homer and Jarren Duran added a solo homer for the Red Sox.

Masataka Yoshida hit two hits with an RBI and extended his streak with at least one hit to 11 for the Red Sox.

Bo Bichette homered for three runs and went on base five times in five attempts for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays finished with a 16-3 record against the Red Sox last season.

Josh Winckowski (2-0) pitched two relief innings.

With the Red Sox trailing 3-2, Duran hit a long ball into the center field seats, onto José Berríos.

After seven blank innings in his previous start, Berríos gave up five runs in five and a third innings.

Red Sox starting pitcher Corey Kluber allowed three runs in five and a third innings with seven strikeouts and four walks.
