Hicks allowed his team to score first for the first time this season, in five games.

He sent a sliding Yusei Kikuchi (0-1) beyond right center field, slamming a first homer this season.

Nestor Cortes and four relievers limited the Jays to three singles and two doubles.

The Blue Jays had 23 runs in their first four games, totaling 38 hits.

Last season, Hicks did not play beyond May 12 with a wrist injury. He had to be operated.

Cortes gave up three hits in four and a third innings, striking out five batters. He did not allow a base on walks.

Clay Holmes (1-0) had five outs. Miguel Castro had to deal with an error in the seventh. Jonathan Loaisiga retired Vladimir Guerrero with a single shot in the eighth, with two runners on base.

Aroldis Chapman had two batters at bat in the ninth.

New York added a run on an error in the fourth, then Giancarlo Stanton hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Kikuchi was the victim of three runs and five hits in three and a third innings.

Jays right fielder Teoscar Hernandez pinned Josh Donaldson at the plate in the first inning, following a double from Anthony Rizzo. Donaldson had got himself into trouble by stopping once he reached third base.

Wednesday night, Jose Berrios (0-0) will face Gerrit Cole (0-0).

Berrios had the shortest outing of his career as a season opener, leaving after 34 shots against Texas.

He struck out just one batter, allowing four runs and three hits.
