Blue Jays beat Angels

(Anaheim) Tim Mayza retired Shohei Ohtani with bases loaded to end the game, and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Los Angeles Angels 12-11 in 10 innings on Sunday.

Matt Chapman hit a grand slam in the sixth and Kevin Kiermaier drove in the deciding run with a 10-doublee round for the Blue Jays, who overcame a six-point deficit before squandering a four-point lead in a tough fight.

“It seems like every game I’ve played here in my career on a Sunday has been crazy,” said Chapman, who spent his first five major league seasons with the Oakland Athletics before being traded to the Jays.

It’s always long matches that go one way and then the other. We just stayed in the moment. »

Ohtani hit one of the Angels’ four home runs but failed on the game’s final out as the Jays won two of three meetings in the series and ended their road trip with a 6-4 record.

Hunter Renfroe, Brandon Drury and Logan O’Hoppe got the ball out of bounds for the Angels, who lost for the fifth time since 2020 despite hitting at least four home runs. Ohtani hit a long ball for the third time this season.

The Jays trailed 6-0 after four innings before scoring 10 straight runs in the sixth and seventh. The Jays led 10-7 in the ninth inning until the last out before the Angels came back and tied the game.

With Cavan Biggio as designated rider during the 10eKiermaier hit a double down the right field line off Carlos Estevez (0-1) to give the team the lead.

Kiermaier, who also had a triple good for two runs in the sixth and a good single for two runs in the seventh, then scored on George Springer’s hit to make it 12-10.

The Angels loaded the bases with two outs in 10e sleeve. After catcher Alejandro Kirk was unable to catch a foul ball that fell into play, Mike Trout walked Trevor Richards to make it 12-11.

Mayza forced an 0-2 count on Ohtani before grounding him out for his first save this season.

“I love the way we didn’t give up,” said manager John Schneider. It got a little contagious, then it just kept adding up. That says a lot about these guys. They are in it until the end. »

Jordan Romano (1-0) is the winning pitcher.

The Blue Jays trailed 6-0 after starter Yusei Kikuchi gave up three home runs. But they got six runs in the sixth set, when Chapman’s grand slam started the comeback and Kiermaier tied with a two-run triple.

The Jays added four runs in the seventh inning to take the lead.

Drury’s one-run homer brought the Angels within three runs before they tied the game in the ninth inning.

“We’re all trying to get each other up, make plays and do whatever we have to do,” Kiermaier said. There were some interesting moments, but at the end of the day we shook hands and here we celebrate a great flight back to Toronto. »

Ohtani, who went to the same high school as Kikuchi, hit a two-run homer in the center and O’Hoppe added a one-run homer in the fourth inning.
