Blocking of Canadian news by Meta | Quebecor withdraws all its ads from Facebook and Instagram

(Montreal) Quebecor is now withdrawing all its advertisements from the Meta, Facebook and Instagram platforms, to protest against the pressure tactics of the technology giant.

In the wake of the passing of the Online News Act in Ottawa, Meta decided to block all Canadian journalistic content on its platforms.

In a press release sent Wednesday morning, Quebecor said such behavior “cannot be tolerated”.

“Due to the actions of Meta, which categorically refuses to engage in negotiations, Quebecor announces that it is withdrawing immediately, and until further notice, all advertising investments by its subsidiaries and business units on Facebook and Instagram platforms,” the company announced.

Quebecor adds that Meta’s decision “goes against all ethical values of any society that believes in the importance of having access to reliable and quality content, necessary for a healthy democracy. »

Quebecor also encourages other companies, governments and institutions to follow suit.

Meta isn’t the only tech company to react to the Trudeau government’s passage of the law. Google, another giant targeted by the piece of legislation, cracked down on its side by removing news links from its search engine.
