Bloc Québécois Congress: activists prefer open relationship to marriage with the PQ

Despite the evidence of love between the Parti Québécois (PQ) and the Bloc Québécois (BQ) which has continued since yesterday, the Bloc delegates preferred an open relationship to the constraints of a marriage.

On the second day of the BQ convention being held in Drummondville on Saturday, Bloc delegates rejected by a large margin a resolution that the party “undertake to support the Parti Québécois until full independence from the Quebec”.

Instead, the delegates preferred to modify the following resolution to “recognize the historic and privileged ties that unite the Bloc Québécois and the Parti Québécois” with a view to “bringing together separatists of all stripes”.

This is the opinion of Hauris Des Alliers, a young representative of the PQ in Bellechasse, for whom a “firm alliance” with the PQ could limit the potential of the Bloc Québécois.

“The sovereignty project is a project that will include all Quebecers. It is important that everyone at the provincial level does not feel excluded because they do not vote PQ”, he said, even if a “connivance” between the two goes without saying.

His colleague Elizabeth Siino, also from the Youth Forum, believes that the Bloc could “shoot itself in the foot” by refusing sovereignists of other allegiances.

“There are people who will not feel in their place in the Bloc Québécois if we tell them that we only encourage and support the PQ because we are very aware that we have activists from Québec solidaire and from other pro-independence parties who join us,” she said.

natural alliance

Conversely, a Bloc activist from Joliette, who did not want to name himself, would have preferred that the party formalize in its program its “natural alliance” with the PQ.

“Of course, strategically it can go both ways, but I’m still for it, even if there are people who won’t like it,” said the latter, who assures that on the ground in Joliette, the collaboration between former PQ member Véronique Hivon and elected Bloc member Gabriel Ste-Marie has borne fruit.

In his speech Friday evening, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon made known his intention to return the favor to Yves-François Blanchet, who had made a few appearances on the ground for the new PQ leader during the fall provincial elections.

“You were there for us in the last election, watch us in the next federal election. We will be there, we will be by your side, we will give our all. We are going to live extraordinary moments together”, he launched after welcoming the “historic rise” of the Bloc in 2019 under Mr. Blanchet.
