Blinken urges Baghdad to pursue perpetrators of attacks targeting US forces

The United States on Tuesday called on Iraq to pursue the perpetrators of attacks that have targeted bases housing American soldiers on its soil in recent days, according to the State Department.

In a phone call to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Chia al-Soudani, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed Baghdad’s condemnation of these attacks and “urged the Prime Minister to pursue the perpetrators and uphold the commitment made by the “Iraq to ensure security at these facilities,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement.

At least five drone and rocket attacks targeted three Iraqi bases where American troops and the international anti-jihadist coalition are deployed.

These attacks increased after the start of the war between Israel and Palestinian Hamas on October 7.

Most of the attacks were claimed by a group called “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” on Telegram channels affiliated with Shiite factions loyal to Iran.

The United States on Monday accused Iran of “actively facilitating” attacks on bases where American soldiers are stationed in the Middle East.
