Bless Véronique Hivon! | The duty

We learn this week that France is moving towards legislation on medical assistance in dying, which its leaders rather call end-of-life support. A citizens’ convention considered the issue and split 3 to 1 on it. And Christian Rioux predicts, no doubt correctly, that “the debate promises to be explosive”.

Let’s bless Véronique Hivon, who, through her consensual approach, managed to bring this issue to a successful conclusion with us without too many problems, by advancing slowly and ensuring at each stage that the necessary markers were put in place to avoid slippages. The practice that we have seen in Quebec since the adoption of the law on end-of-life care in 2014 seems positive and shows that this consensual path strengthens social cohesion and is promising for the future.
