The famous cuckoo clocks of the Black Forest, in Germany, no longer attract the curious. In order to bring tourists back, some craftsmen are looking for new outlets.

The largest cuckoo clock in the world is located in the heart of the Black Forest (Germany). With its six-tonne clock and eight-meter-high pendulum, the show takes place every hour. Normally, it impresses thousands of tourists. Since the start of the pandemic, watchmakers in the Black Forest, like all craftsmen in the region, have felt quite alone.

It hurts, you can say it like that. But it’s no use complaining. We are now looking for other markets., says Uwe Kammerer, cuckoo clock maker in the Black Forest. Fortunately, internet orders placed from abroad are on the rise. Some watchmakers take advantage of this period to try to reinvent cuckoo clocks. Andreas Kreyer, of Coucous Rombach und Haas, thus offers more refined versions, or highlighting the mechanism.
