Pope Francis announces on Tuesday the renewal of the Council of Cardinals to which the head of the Catholic Archdiocese of Quebec, Mgr Gérald Cyprien Lacroix accedes.
The Council of Cardinals was renewed by the sovereign pontiff, the mandate of the previous Council having expired.
The Council of Cardinals was instituted by Pope Francis in 2013. Its mission is to assist him in the government of the universal Church and to study a project for the revision of the Roman Curia.
In a message sent Tuesday on social networks, Bishop Lacroix writes to be very touched by the confidence of the pope. He affirms that joining the Council of Cardinals is a great responsibility, but he recalls that his first responsibility remains the Archdiocese of Quebec.
The Secretary of the Council is now Msgr. Marco Mellino. The Italian prelate already held this position in 2020 before being appointed secretary of the Interdicasterial Commission for the revision of the general regulations of the Roman Curia.
Gérald Cyprien Lacroix, 65, has been Archbishop of Quebec and Primate of Canada since 2011.
