In the Landes, in Biscarrosse, the beaches have been eaten away by erosion. Access was even prohibited for security reasons.
The ballet of dump trucks began on Saturday March 9 on the beach of Biscarrosse (Landes). They take advantage of low tide to resilt the beach and strengthen the dune. Winter storms and strong tides have eaten away at the coastline, which has retreated by around ten meters. The beach has subsided by 5 meters. Re-sanding has been a necessity for the municipality since 2018.
Necessary operations for the coastline
In 2021, 130,000 cubic meters had been moved onto the beach. 2024 is expected to be a record year. In the meantime, the beach remains closed to the public, because the dune has transformed into a cliff. The extraordinary situation of Biscarrosse, closely monitored by the scientific authorities. The entire Aquitaine coastline is likely to be affected by erosion. Two to three other sand reloading operations are also planned between now and June.
